Time to put aside all of our political difference for a while, because I am starting to see some things that have me very, very concerned. People are going to start getting angry. Biggest question I have is why are airplanes still being allowed to land at my airport.

I took a quick look at the last two articles. The last one, about staff not directly speaking to media - I get it. In theory, if anyone is going to be part of an interview, it needs to be cleared. But at the same time, I think it is good that we hear anonymous reports of people on the front-lines. Those kind of bone-chilling stories might help knock some sense into people.

The son of a conman son in law of a conman’s ilk who the cult continues to support deserve the same blade as the hospital “leadership” who approve such firings. These people are shit, no two ways about it.
I see 45 is blathering about “witch hunts” again, too. Fuck him and his cult. I wonder how much his crime family will profit from this mess.
The military one, however, is exactly what I would expect. Don’t go outside procedural lines, don’t get in the way of the ego of an appointed superior, especially appointed by someone who has been downplaying everything since the beginning.

The acting SecNav spent seven years in the Navy as a junior officer 40 years ago. Jared Kushner? What are his qualifications? When President Trump's base finally turns on him, it'll be ugly, but we'll be too buried in rubble to notice nor much care.

We are so fucking bones right now. Thanks for voting in an incompetent boob, Trump supporters.

A friend of my uncle is an oncologist in Manhatta n, the shittyness/ chaos is much worse than is being reported, because they don’t want people to panic.

Biggest question I have is why are airplanes still being allowed to land at my airport.
Because planes can’t get coronavirus. Because some people still have to travel to areas in support functions. Because without air cargo to ship things expediently, we could be in an even worse situation. Most domestic travel at my airport is well below capacity (less than 15 per aircraft is the average), with approximately 50% of flights canceled outright. Would you rather have all those people crammed into a Greyhound bus for longer time, making stops along the way?
And on a personal level, because I don’t want to lose my job and therefore lose my way to support my family during an already trying time.

Lol. His base will never turn on him. If they haven’t seen enough to turn on him yet, I don’t think anything will turn them.

I don’t think he needs naval or even military experience. Civilian control of the military is a pretty important principle. That said, firing the man for writing that letter (presumably after previous attempts through normal channels were ignored) is clearly not an ideal response, it’s just nakedly political.
I’ve seen nothing from Kushner that indicates he’s qualified for anything, let alone his current portfolio, which appears to include everything.

The worst thing I’ve heard is the extra refrigerated trucks at the hospitals to be used as temporary morgues. I found that quite disturbing.

In Jalisco, the state forensic team has used refrigerated trucks in the past to store dead bodies (in 2018, it was a scandal) because they ran out of space at the coro
ner’s office

Firing doctors in the middle of a pandemic that is going to overwhelm our healthcare system is absolutely idiotic. We don’t have enough PPE because most of our hospitals are for profit institutions that are being run on the margins in order to maximize profit. My sister’s hospital has been over capacity and under staffed since October, for reasons unrelated to coronavirus. The people who have been at the helm of healthcare systems need to be held accountable.

Yeah... I have a few aunts that are nurses and MDs in NY and NJ and they said the same thing. My student’s with family in NY all have double digit numbers of sick family members.
I’m a bit worried about Oppo’s Steve From Manhattan.

The thing is, we were going to be fucked either way. Yes, we are more fucked than we would have been if competent people were running the show, but there are deep flaws within the structure of society as a whole, that simply would not have been able to be fixed even by competent leadership.

On a personal level, I hope you keep your job. I think all of us still with jobs are very nervous, and nobody wants anyone to lose their jobs.
On a epidemiological level, locking down cities while still allowing air travel doesn’t make any sense. If we’re treating this as a “war”, then only the most essential things/people should be flying. We’ve told countless other people they can’t work because they’ll spread the virus, then left open the thing that spread it around the entire world.

Watch the video of the crew openly applauding the fired captain and chanting his name. That’s more what I find interesting. As you stated, everyone expected the captain to be fired for pointing out the failings of leadership. What you don’t expect is for that many sailors to openly raise a middle finger to the Commander in Chief. I have a lot of friends who were in the military and while they most definitely did not like Obama, would never openly (or even privately) disparage him or his policies.

It’s gonna get ugly either way. You’ve got NYC in a nightmare situation with the feds telling people the national stockpile it’s for the feds, and sailors openly raising a big middle finger to the Commander in Chief.

I suspect the captain will also have no problem finding gainful employment - if anything, some will consider him a hero, and that might not be an error. He knew what he was doing, and stood up for his men. He’s more of a warrior than his paper pushing boss.
Obama was respectable and imperfect. 45 is imperfect but very hard to respect.

It makes sense that you want to have a generally high usage of any sort of service to justify not over-building infrastructure. It's just a little grim for things like morgues.

Hopefully. Ha d to feel pretty good getting a send off like that. Real leaders fall on the sword for their men when they need to, they don’t pass it along.
I don’t talk politics a whole lot with my friends, but I my veteran friends most definitely voted for Trump. However, I think he lost all their support after Gen. Mattis left and the disrespect shown by Trump towards him and McCain. Trump seems to have something out for the Navy.

The Trump base probably views Captain Crozier as a traitor. There are many, many military people in the Trump base and I bet effectively none of them ever had their commanding officer fall on his career sword for them.
This out of Florida. I like Politico; I read them every day. I think they go after the story and their reporting has led to people in the president’s cabinet being ousted.

Oh for sure. I can just imagine if Hillary would have been president. Every republican would have been decrying that this was a big govt conspiracy to take over the country or some such. Can you imagine what red state America would do if a national lock down was imposed?

I know you were in the Navy. Most of my friends were in the Marines or Army with some AF guys (my BIL is an AF lifer).
My Marine friends lost all confidence when Gen. Mattis left, and they all most definitely voted for Trump.

Had he used the “proper channels”, his concerns would have been swept under the rug and not acknowledged, not to mention not acted upon . He’ll land on his feet.
I’ve never understood how praetorian sector types can get behind chickenhawks who have never worked a day in their godforsaken lives like 45 and his ilk. Not sure if it is tough guy syndrome, or just job security. It’d be hilarious if the GOP lost military support, but I won’t hold my breath, one can justify a lot with minimal mental gymnastics.

I was Army; 84-90 . Then Air Force Reserve. Snuze was Navy...
President Trump has squandered one opportunity after another.

I think most of it comes down to job security. They all know he’s a pussy. Keep in mind some of them are the most liberal guys I know and voted for Obama and Clinton. When you’ve seen and done the things these guys have, the tough guy syndrome goes away. Of course a few are just plain nuts.

Most military guys I know had dangerous assignments like being stationed on a laundry ship in Jersey City or shuffling papers for a motor pool in German fantasyland. They too are quiet about their political sympathies, but I hope they’ll make the less harmful choice, even if they don’t like the letter beside the name.
My fave is the uncle I mentioned before, my uncle - Marine, ‘Nam combat with multiple tours, and very liberal. The spirit of the 60s never left him, unlike many of his generation. I know the choice he’ll make, but he lives in WA, so it is moot.

And yeah, that makes sense. Here’s some frame of reference. This time of year, our largest air carrier (by passenger volume) averages between 250-400 passengers per hour , up to about 700 for the odd occasion when they have 3-4 flights landing back-to-back in the evenings. Currently, their daily throughput is under 500.
Maybe your area hasn’t been given a shelter-in-place order yet. But for having lived in such a city for a few weeks now, I’d hardly call any of it a lockdown. Sure, lots of businesses have been closed, and the number of people out and about has been drastically reduced. But it isn’t like every major city in California is a ghost town where you can just 120mph down the freeway any time you like. There’s still a degree of traffic on the roads.
From what I’m seeing in my day-to-day work is a lot of people trying to get back home. Imagine, say, your kids are visiting grandma and grandpa across the country when shelter-in-place orders go out. Would you just say, “O h well, they can live there now” as opposed to “I want my children back”?

I live in the middle of Phoenix, one of the biggest metro areas in the country. While we’re under “shelter in place”, the actual letter of the law is very lax, but they shut down restaurants weeks ago. I live on the edge of a mountain preserve and the only air pollution I can see from my neighborhood peaks is around Sky Harbor. This in a city that normally has air quality below the national average.
Either way, my wife planted veggies in our garden a few weeks ago and your welcome to some if shit goes south for you. Good luck.
